Its the most wonderful time of the year!

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Its the hap, happiest season of all.  Today starts the very best of all sporst seasons.  Sure, Tonight’s games, even this weekends games aren’t the marquee match-ups of the year, but College Football is finally back.  On a local level, it means being able to listen to the Sports Animal radio station again, as there is some honest to goodness news to be talked about. On a national level there will be great games for 3 months to come.  Someone finally summed it up in a perfect manner for me.

On another note, I got a run in last night.  It wasn’t much of an effort as I was beat from lack of sleep and a long couple of days at work and getting the house ready for the weekend.  But took the pup and headed out for just a tad under 4 miles in 36:15.  Felt good to get a run in, but I hit the bed hard and tired last night.

I forgot to write that I actually went out to the lake last week to get in a bit of roll practice.  Went after work w/ C and the kiddos.  They took the stroller and walked around the bank, playing in the grass whilst I paddled.  Didn’t get too much time, but hit all my rolls.  Was in the newest boat (el Jefe) and boy is it the easiest thing to roll.  A rusty hip snap and that thing was up.  Bracing was great, could almost lay down in the water and it would just pop right back up.  Can’t wait to get it on some moving water.

That said, I’ve definitely been getting extremely inflexible.  So I pulled out the Yoga for paddlers dvd and had a session last night.  Felt great, but need much more.  Maybe a repeat tonight or tomorrow.

Beautiful Run

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

I had the best run I’ve had in a while Tuesday night.  We had a cold front come through Sunday night and stall out over us.  It brought rain all day Mon and Tues.  We needed it desperately.  But more importantly, it brought much colder temps.  Highs Mon and Tues were in the 70’s.  It was beautiful, and a glimpse of fall, right around the corner.  I know we’ll be hit in the face with at least one more week of high 90’s, but man I can’t wait for the fall and winter and the cooler temps.

But my Monday lunch run was cancelled, as was the Tues lunch run.  So was Basketball Tues night.  So as it had let up on the rain I took off with the pup around 8:45pm on Tues.  The legs felt great after 2 days of unintentional rest, so I figured I’d do 4 miles, as the pup can’t do much more.  The temp was perfect, and the dampness in the air made it even better.  The legs did great, and I even put in .8 miles at a sub 8 min pace.  Ended up with 4.2 miles in 35:30.  Even got Tiger Woods congratulations for my fastest mile on the ipod.

Man I can’t wait for more 60-70 degree runs.

Newsletter Month 11.75 edition

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

So I guess I’m a complete slacker as far as this writing thing goes.  Haven’t been on time, except maybe once. So no more promising about how I’ll be on time next month.

We had yet another busy month.  I’m sensing a trend.  Work has been jam packed, and the home doesn’t clean and cook for itself ya know.

We started the month off with a visit from Nana and Pop as well as Cousins Evie and Kirby.  It was a twins week like no other.  While I got the pleasure of working, you got to go to Paul’s Valley to visit relatives, and even got to go swimming at Turner Falls.  On the way home, however, Nana’s van had a very random breakdown.  Luckily you were all still at the park, and could get in the water to cool off, while waiting for the calvary to ride in to the rescue.  I borrowed Art’s “busburban” and drove down to retreive the whole crew.  We were packed in, but managed to get back to Norman, while the van headed down to Ardmore to be fixed.  Nana, Pop, E&C rode the train down to pick the van up and you two and Mommy traveled down to Paul’s Valley to meet them and see more family.

The next weekend was your very first trip out to “The Ranch” just south of Lubbock.  We met Nana, Pop, E&C out there, as well as Aunt Sherry and Uncle Doug.  Even Uncle Brad flew in for the weekend.  We had a great time, riding four wheelers and motorbikes (Mommy and I) while you two loved to splash in the pool.  We got to see the cows and horses as well.  We had such a good time we decided to stay until Monday morning and had to beat the rain out of the canyon as we left.

You two are both eating more and more food on your own, but still love oatmeal and other foods we feed you.  You have begun taking juice and even milk out of a sippy cup with a straw.  You both are getting very adept at this.  We can tell when you are finished though as you both take your cups and toss them over the side of your chairs.

Abs is now pushing toys while walking.  It started with a cardboard box, and not is any toy that is light enough to be pushed.  Geo is sitting up all on his own from laying down, and even began crawling around the first of August.

What a busy month, and I’m sure I’ve missed some. Two weeks and you’ll be 1 year old.  Oh my how the year has flown.

B-Ball and Biking

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Took two days for cross training.  Las night made it out to B-Ball for an hour.  Was late as the kiddos have been battling some stomach bug and have not wanted to go to bed at their bed time.  Still got in a full hour of play.  4 on 4 full court.  Lots of running, a couple good plays, but man do I need to work on my post up skills.

Brought the bike to work for a lunch ride.  Ended up putting in a little over 18 miles in just about an hour.  Went down to the river trail and battled the wind.  Found the downside of riding down by the river.  The trail is on the low side of the bank, with flood barriers up above, so the river is like a funnel for wind.  Not too bad if it is North or south, but a bear when it decides to come east or west.  Today was an easterly wind, and it was whipping.  The Out was nice-cruising along at a nice 21-22 mph pace.  The In sucked-really pushing it to keep it in the 16-17 mph range.  Finished with a couple of hills near the office.

Sunday Night Running

Monday, August 11th, 2008

After skipping a workout Friday and Saturday, I felt the need to get out Sunday evening.  Finished harvesting the garden for the day (got the second round of toms (about 10 large cherry toms) and took the pup around 8:45.  Put in 3.5 in sub 30 minutes.  Decided to do a tempo mile at about 1.75 miles when a couple on bikes leisurely passed me.  Decided to try to keep up with them, and was successful for about a 1/4 mile, but then cut it back to around 8 min/mile for another 3/4 miles.  Felt good, and the leg was/is still relatively pain free.

Loaded up the bike to ride at luch today, but woke up to a winderful thunderstorm.  We really needed the rain.  Our grass was slowly going from brown to grey, so I won’t complain about probably being rained out of a ride today.  It is still overcast, and probably even sprinkling.  Oh well, maybe another run tonight.

More running

Monday, August 4th, 2008

So Saturday we went out to dinner with some friends.  Good company except for the twins who were relentless and very clingy/needy for the very first time.  Ate way too much Mexican food, so decided that I needed a run.  So waited for the sun to go down and the temps to start dropping.  Left the houst around 9:15pm with temps plummeting to near 90.  Took the dog for the first 2 miles, before heading off for another 2.25.  Good run, overall, except for the stuffed feeling.

Took another lunch run this afternoon.  Remembered to bring a water bottle and glad I did.  The bank readouts I past were reading 101 and it felt every bit of that.  Man was it hot.  I really need to get up and run in the mornings.  Oh well.
