Run, run and yoga

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Have actually been running a bit lately, but just been too busy to post anything.  Saturday I took the kiddos for a 3.25 miler in a killer wind and light mist.  Wore me out pushing the wind stopper in  front of me, but they both digged the ride.

Monday did a 4.75 miler at lunch.  PErfect day with a high near 70 and clear skies, no wind.  Did a loop around and through downtown and midtown.  Great mix of hills and flats and threw in a large set of stairs at the end.

Tuesday went to B-ball, but didn’t have enough show for a game, so took off for a run around campus.  Didn’t have the ipod, so no mileage, but was in the 4.5-5 mile range.  Good run, and campus was hopping for 8:45 on a Tuesday night.

Last night I had kiddo duties, so was in the house for the evening.  Got them down and turned on some yoga.  Felt great.  I’ve been extremely tight in the legs lately, even getting some cramps in the hammys, so it was just what I needed.

Tonight should be another run with the wind sled.  Good stuff.

Running and Paddling Weekend

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Finally dragged myself out of bed early enough on a Saturday to put in a longish run.  Up before the sun and out the door by 6:40am, just in time to see the sun begin peaking over the horizon.  Didn’t have a set route or goal, but wanted to put in at least an hour.  So off I headed to campus letting the sun warm the 60 degree morning.  Almost wanted a jacket for the first 3/4 mile, but after that, the temp was just glorious.

Had the roads to myself until I got fairly near campus where there were a couple brave souls stirring, getting the tailgating supplies out and cranking.  Not too many folks, and surpirsing, didn’t see a single beer. Turned north at the end of the stadium, say the crew getting ready for the crowds, and then headed back toward home.  As I neared the road home, I felt a few extra miles at least, so I turned north for a bit before heading into the neighborhood.  Finished with 7.6 on the iPod, so probably more like 8 miles.  The legs felt surprising great given I haven’t been over 5 miles in at least 5 months.

Saturday we were surprised that the Cossatot was holding out very well, so we scheduled a rare warm weather run for Sunday.  Got up bright and early to meet the crew at 5am.  Loaded the truck and headed to Arkayakansas.  Got to the put in 9:45 and were paddling by 10:20.  Had a great run of the middle section, including a combat roll in the last drop of “the Esses”.  Proceeded down to the falls for my first run on them.  Made clean drops in Cossatosser, Eye-Opener and BMF.  Had the line on Washing Machine, but ended up pointing too far right and nudged bowling ball rock which gave me a bit of kick back into the machine, so I was hard a paddling and went right into the rock which rolled me.  Unfortunately I was unable to roll back up in the foamy washout and swam.  Didn’t flush into Whiplash, but my boat did take the left sneak route before coming to rest on a rock feet away from the final drop. Picked the boat out and carried back up the hellish 1/3 mile portage to the take out.

Great day on the river with a great group of paddlers.  Completed the day with dinner at Pete’s Place in Krebs, Okla.  Best gnocchi on earth.  Try it if you get the chance.

Finished off the weekend with a 3.75 miler on Monday morning before taking G&A to the Dr for their 1 yr check-up and shots.  I was sore, but was able to work some of it out.

Its the most wonderful time of the year!

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Its the hap, happiest season of all.  Today starts the very best of all sporst seasons.  Sure, Tonight’s games, even this weekends games aren’t the marquee match-ups of the year, but College Football is finally back.  On a local level, it means being able to listen to the Sports Animal radio station again, as there is some honest to goodness news to be talked about. On a national level there will be great games for 3 months to come.  Someone finally summed it up in a perfect manner for me.

On another note, I got a run in last night.  It wasn’t much of an effort as I was beat from lack of sleep and a long couple of days at work and getting the house ready for the weekend.  But took the pup and headed out for just a tad under 4 miles in 36:15.  Felt good to get a run in, but I hit the bed hard and tired last night.

Beautiful Run

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

I had the best run I’ve had in a while Tuesday night.  We had a cold front come through Sunday night and stall out over us.  It brought rain all day Mon and Tues.  We needed it desperately.  But more importantly, it brought much colder temps.  Highs Mon and Tues were in the 70’s.  It was beautiful, and a glimpse of fall, right around the corner.  I know we’ll be hit in the face with at least one more week of high 90’s, but man I can’t wait for the fall and winter and the cooler temps.

But my Monday lunch run was cancelled, as was the Tues lunch run.  So was Basketball Tues night.  So as it had let up on the rain I took off with the pup around 8:45pm on Tues.  The legs felt great after 2 days of unintentional rest, so I figured I’d do 4 miles, as the pup can’t do much more.  The temp was perfect, and the dampness in the air made it even better.  The legs did great, and I even put in .8 miles at a sub 8 min pace.  Ended up with 4.2 miles in 35:30.  Even got Tiger Woods congratulations for my fastest mile on the ipod.

Man I can’t wait for more 60-70 degree runs.

Sunday Night Running

Monday, August 11th, 2008

After skipping a workout Friday and Saturday, I felt the need to get out Sunday evening.  Finished harvesting the garden for the day (got the second round of toms (about 10 large cherry toms) and took the pup around 8:45.  Put in 3.5 in sub 30 minutes.  Decided to do a tempo mile at about 1.75 miles when a couple on bikes leisurely passed me.  Decided to try to keep up with them, and was successful for about a 1/4 mile, but then cut it back to around 8 min/mile for another 3/4 miles.  Felt good, and the leg was/is still relatively pain free.

Loaded up the bike to ride at luch today, but woke up to a winderful thunderstorm.  We really needed the rain.  Our grass was slowly going from brown to grey, so I won’t complain about probably being rained out of a ride today.  It is still overcast, and probably even sprinkling.  Oh well, maybe another run tonight.

More running

Monday, August 4th, 2008

So Saturday we went out to dinner with some friends.  Good company except for the twins who were relentless and very clingy/needy for the very first time.  Ate way too much Mexican food, so decided that I needed a run.  So waited for the sun to go down and the temps to start dropping.  Left the houst around 9:15pm with temps plummeting to near 90.  Took the dog for the first 2 miles, before heading off for another 2.25.  Good run, overall, except for the stuffed feeling.

Took another lunch run this afternoon.  Remembered to bring a water bottle and glad I did.  The bank readouts I past were reading 101 and it felt every bit of that.  Man was it hot.  I really need to get up and run in the mornings.  Oh well.

Lunch Run

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Back in the swing today.  4.75 miles, just over 41 minutes.  Felt good, but good golly was I wet when I got back to the office.  IT must have been 95% humidity out, and near 85F.  The humidity was killer however.  IT felt like I had returned to South Louisiana for the day.  Unfortunately we still haven’t gotten any rain out of the clouds though.

On another note, looks like the pro testing still needs to get better.  Ricco was tested about 10 times, and only 2 popped positive.  That make me feel better about the prospects of a clean race.
